Nurturing Baby, Caring for Mom: The Mental Health Side of Breastfeeding

There is something incredibly beautiful about the early days of motherhood. They are filled with tiny moments you’ll treasure forever, like a sleepy baby nestled against your chest, little hands wrapped around your finger, quiet feeds in the middle of the night when the rest of the world is asleep.

But alongside those beautiful moments often comes another reality that isn’t talked about enough.

Motherhood is hard.

Breastfeeding, while natural, doesn’t always come naturally. It can be physically demanding, emotionally overwhelming, and mentally exhausting. Some days it feels like a beautiful way to connect with your baby. Other days it can feel isolating, frustrating, or simply like one more thing you’re trying to figure out while running on very little sleep.

During Breastfeeding Awareness Month, we want to celebrate not only the incredible work mothers do to nourish their babies, but also the importance of caring for the women behind that work.

Because moms matter, too.

Motherhood Is Full of Mixed Emotions

One of the biggest surprises for many new mothers is how many emotions can exist at the same time.

You may feel overwhelming love for your baby while also grieving the independence you once had.

You may feel grateful to breastfeed while simultaneously feeling touched out, exhausted, or worried about whether you’re doing enough.

You may feel proud of your body one day and frustrated by it the next.

None of these feelings make you a bad mother.

They make you human.

Motherhood is filled with moments of joy, uncertainty, sacrifice, and growth—and it’s okay for all of those emotions to exist together.

There Is No Perfect Mother

Today’s mothers are often surrounded by messages telling them what they should be doing.

  • Breastfeed exclusively.
  • Pump enough milk.
  • Enjoy every moment.
  • Bounce back quickly.
  • Keep the house clean.
  • Take care of everyone else.

It’s an impossible standard.

The truth is that every mother and every baby are different. Your feeding journey may include breastfeeding, pumping, formula feeding, weaning earlier than expected, or a combination of many different approaches.

Your worth as a mother has never been measured by how your baby is fed.

Your baby doesn’t need perfection.

They need you. A mother who feels supported, cared for, and able to show up as her authentic self.

Caring for Yourself Is Caring for Your Baby

Many mothers find themselves placing their own needs at the very bottom of the list.

  • Skipping meals.
  • Ignoring exhaustion.
  • Holding in difficult emotions.
  • Feeling guilty for asking for help.

But your mental health is not separate from your motherhood journey; it is part of it.

When you care for yourself, you’re also caring for your baby.

Giving yourself permission to rest, lean on your support system, or simply admit that this season feels hard isn’t weakness. It’s an act of strength.

How Therapy Can Support Mothers

Motherhood changes nearly every part of life. Your identity, relationships, body, routines, and emotional world. Having a space that’s entirely your own can make an incredible difference.

Therapy offers a compassionate, judgment-free place where you can slow down, process your experiences, and be cared for while you’re caring for everyone else.

Whether you’re navigating pregnancy, postpartum, breastfeeding, weaning, or simply adjusting to the many changes motherhood brings, therapy can help you:

  • Process the emotional ups and downs of motherhood
  • Navigate postpartum anxiety, depression, or overwhelm
  • Reduce feelings of guilt and perfectionism
  • Build confidence in your own parenting journey
  • Strengthen self-compassion and resilience
  • Feel seen, supported, and understood

You don’t have to carry everything on your own.

You Deserve Support, Too
